APEX P01: Algebra-based Physics Introductory

APEX Algebra-based Physics – Introductory (APEX P01):本课程专为从未学习过物理的同学,或者希望复习力学基本概念的同学设置。建议学员同时进行或者已经完成APEX Algebra For Physics(APEX M01)的学习,或者已经掌握了中级代数 (algebra II, or PreCalculus),几何(geometry),特别是三角函数 (trigonometry) 等高中数学知识。 课程内容大致和中国的初中及高中物理的力学部分相当。由于对数学知识要求不高,所以非常适合物理的启蒙。本课程着重于介绍和解释基本力学概念,初步培养物理学特殊的思维模式。本课程采用网络授课共30小时,并希望同学们使用10-20小时左右时间完成课后作业。课程结束后建议参加APEX Algebra-based Physics – Advanced (APEX P02)。

 

Course Description: APEX Algebra-based Physics -- Introductory (APEX P01) is an algebra-based, introductory college-level physics course that explores topics such as Newtonian mechanics; work, energy, and power

Reference book: "College Physics: A Strategic Approach," by Knight, Jones, and Field, or an equivalent textbook.  

*We do not require students to use the book for our course. Instead, we strongly recommend students to take notes and take advantage of lecture slides, lecture recordings, homework assignments, homework solutions, exams and office hours to enhance their learning outcome.

Contents:

1. Kinematics 动力学 (6 hours)

How do we represent motion? The concepts of position, velocity, and acceleration in 1D and higher dimensions.

2. Newton’s Laws 力学 (6 hours)

Identify a system for force analysis, such as gravity, supporting, and friction forces. Construct free-body diagrams and apply Newton’s laws.

3. Work and energy 功和能量 (5 hours)

Analyze the work and energy flow of a system. Identify situations with conserved energy to solve mechanical problems.

4. Momentum 动量 (3 hours)

Analyze the relationship between force, momentum, and impulse. Identify situations with conserved momentum to solve mechanical problems such as collision.

5. Rotation and rigid body 转动和刚体运动 (3 hours)

Analyze the kinetics such as angular velocity and angular acceleration of rotating rigid body. Apply torque analysis to static and rotating objects.

6. Rotational Dynamics 转动力学 (3 hours)

Analyze momentum of inertia, angular momentum, angular momentum conservation.

7. Harmonic motion 简谐运动 (3 hours)

Identify and characterize harmonic motions with periods, frequency, amplitude. Analyze the kinematics, dynamics and energy of harmonic oscillators.
